Introduction
Egypt has been exerting great efforts to mitigate the ongoing energy crisis stemming from a decline in natural gas production. Regional escalations, including the war on Iran and Israel’s attacks against Gaza, have further exacerbated the crisis. Although increased imports of liquefied natural gas have forestalled domestic supply shortages (Rashed et al., 2025), the current situation poses a significant risk to Egypt’s energy security, raising concerns about the stability and reliability of its energy supply
This policy brief provides a comprehensive analysis of current trends in the natural gas sector and delves into their implications for the future. It underscores the importance of exploring alternative solutions and outlines a range of effective strategies to reduce Egypt’s reliance on natural gas. Additionally, it addresses the need to curtail import expenditures for natural gas, highlighting the fiscal and security benefits that could result from these initiatives.
