As part of its work on access to medicines in Egypt Alternative Policy Solutions brings its audience a documentary on the issue of the availability of affordable medicines in light of the spread of the coronavirus, and its ramifications on the health sector. Drug shortages in Egypt are usually attributable to external factors, including the rising costs of imported raw materials and overhead, salary increases following inflation, and the fluctuating value of the Egyptian pound against foreign currency. Another barrier to drug access is the relatively high out-of-pocket expenditure on pharmaceuticals, which accounts for nearly half of Egyptians&rsquo; total private healthcare spending, even though per capita pharmaceutical expenditure in Egypt is among the lowest in the Middle East and North Africa.&nbsp;
