Description: After familiarising the reader with the basic financing provisions of the climate change framework and the guiding principles of climate finance, the article presents recent international developments with regard to climate finance including the latest financial commitments of the international community and the establishment of the Green Climate Fund (GCF) as a new and comprehensive funding mechanism. The article subsequently gives an overview over the various public and private sources of climate financing and over the multitude of channels, mechanisms and actors involved in disbursing climate finance. In this context, the contribution focuses on those disbursement entities specifically designated for mitigation and adaptation issues within the international climate change framework. A separate part deals with the topic of accountability, transparency and corruption as both the large volumes of financial transfers and the complexity of the present climate finance architecture give rise to concern.
