Egypt&rsquo;s relationship with the Horn of Africa countries; Ethiopia, Eritreia, Djibouti and Somalia, is a pivotal nexus in political geography of the region. Due to its complex and intertwined nature, this relationship requires striking a fine balance between national interests, and those demanded by regional cooperation for the purposes of achieving sustainable development and security in the region.&nbsp;&nbsp;
The gravity of this relationship manifests itself in a plethora of issues, particularly the water question. Egypt is heavily dependent on the Nile river as its primary water resource, which flows northwards from the Horn of Africa. As such, alarms have been sounding in Cairo regarding mega-projects affecting the Nile such as the GERD. Any diversions to the river&rsquo;s course could negatively impact Egypt&rsquo;s water share.&nbsp;
On the economic front, Egypt has been seeking greater cooperation with the Horn of Africa countries through infrastructure investments and development projects. These efforts reflect Egypt&rsquo;s eagerness to build strategic partnerships which support economic growth and expand the horizon for further cooperation.
