Two years into the Gaza <a href="https://www.ohchr.org/sites/default/files/documents/hrbodies/hrcouncil/sessions-regular/session60/advance-version/a-hrc-60-crp-3.pdf">genocide</a>, and with a potential <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025/oct/04/trump-gaza-peace-deal">ceasefire agreement</a>, many more governments today recognize the state of Palestine after months of <a href="https://aps.aucegypt.edu/en/articles/1523/starvation-as-a-weapon-the-israeli-engineered-famine-in-gaza">famine</a>, mass displacement, and a near full annexation of the Strip. In the absence of real boycotts and weapons embargoes on Israel, however, decisions to recognize Palestine will remain empty rhetoric.
<h3 dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">Recognition without power: Symbolism and its limits</h3>
The genocide in Gaza has succeeded in shifting international public opinion, to which many governments have responded symbolically. In September 2025, a historic wave of recognition swept across Western capitals, with ten countries <a href="https://press.un.org/en/2025/pal2251.doc.htm">formally acknowledging</a> Palestinian statehood.

Yet much of this recognition rings hollow when set against the same countries&rsquo; ongoing arms sales to Israel. For example, the UK <a href="https://www.gov.uk/government/news/uk-suspends-around-30-arms-export-licences-to-israel-for-use-in-gaza-over-international-humanitarian-law-concerns">suspended</a> only 30 of around 350 active arms export licenses to Israel. It has also exempted the F-35 fighter jet program, even as Israel has been <a href="https://www.amnesty.org.au/over-230-global-organisations-demand-governments-producing-f-35-jets-stop-arming-israel/">extensively deploying</a> these jets in Gaza. The value of F-35 parts is <a href="https://caat.org.uk/app/uploads/2024/10/CAAT-F35-briefing-update-v4.pdf">more than three times</a> the value of all UK aircraft-related exports to Israel since 2016.&nbsp;

This complicity is even more apparent in arms purchases from Israel. Israel <a href="https://new.embassies.gov.il/nepal/en/news/israel-ministry-defense-spokesperson-israel-sets-new-record-defense-exports-over-147-billion#:~:text=Israel%20MOD%20announces%20that%20Israel's,increase%20over%20the%20previous%20year.&amp;text=More%20than%20half%20of%20the,deals%20were%20with%20European%20countries.">reported</a> that arms exports reached an all-time high of USD 14.7 billion in 2024, mainly because &ldquo;the war&rsquo;s operational achievements and the proven battlefield performance of Israeli systems have driven strong international demand for Israeli defense technology,&rdquo; according to the Israeli Ministry of Defense. European countries accounted for more than half of those sales, while an additional 12% went to Arab countries (UAE, Morocco, Bahrain, and Sudan). These deals do more than generate profit: they tie foreign governments to Israel&rsquo;s military industries, discouraging sanctions and creating long-term dependencies that blunt international accountability for the war in Gaza.
Beyond the arms trade, many states are deeply tied to Israel through commercial exchange. Ireland, for example&mdash;which has long been a vocal supporter of the Palestinian cause&mdash;is Israel&rsquo;s <a href="https://comtradeplus.un.org/">second-largest export market</a> after the United States, importing goods worth USD 3.2 billion annually.&nbsp;
Furthermore, among the countries that recently recognized Palestine, seven host companies that are <a href="https://www.ohchr.org/sites/default/files/documents/hrbodies/hrcouncil/sessions-regular/session60/advance-version/a-hrc-60-19-aev.pdf">accused</a> of enabling the expansion of illegal Israeli settlements in the West Bank. These companies reportedly engage in such activities as supplying construction materials for settlements, providing security services, exploiting natural resources, and supporting settlement infrastructure. This accusation comes amid escalating Israeli settlement expansion in the West Bank, with Israel <a href="https://www.eeas.europa.eu/sites/default/files/2025/documents/Report%20on%20Israeli%20Settlements%20in%20the%20occupied%20West%20Bank%20including%20East%20Jerusalem%20(Reporting%20period%20January%20-%20December%202024).pdf">advancing</a> over 34,141 settlement units in 2023, the highest since 2006 and substantially above historical norms.&nbsp;

<h3 dir="ltr">The case for boycotts, divestment, and sanctions&nbsp;</h3>
South Africa provides a compelling precedent to challenge oppression and enforce human rights. The situation in apartheid South Africa and Palestine <a href="https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/10402659.2014.876304">shares</a> striking parallels in systemic oppression, segregation, and denial of rights.&nbsp;

Apartheid in South Africa did not end through recognition of some rights alone, but through sustained campaigns of boycotts, divestment, and sanctions <a href="https://books.google.com.eg/books?hl=en&amp;lr=&amp;id=odEO0JqAuzMC&amp;oi=fnd&amp;pg=PP6&amp;dq=bds+south+africa&amp;ots=y9CysWzqJi&amp;sig=cSY0bVz0KP-2C8LUfjlE8LKQB50&amp;redir_esc=y#v=onepage&amp;q=bds%20south%20africa&amp;f=false">(BDS)</a>. The African National Congress and allied groups used domestic and international boycotts to challenge discriminatory laws, mobilize mass civil disobedience, and apply economic and diplomatic pressure on the regime. Internal campaigns, such as the Defiance Campaign and general strikes, demonstrated the power of mass mobilization, while international boycotts&mdash;including corporate, cultural, academic, and sports sanctions&mdash;helped isolate the regime, weaken its economy, and ultimately pressure it into negotiating and dismantling the apartheid system in 1994.&nbsp;
Just as apartheid South Africa required sustained international pressure to end institutionalized oppression, so too does meaningful action against Israel&rsquo;s policies demand more than recognition. Moving beyond words to concrete measures requires ending arms transfers, suspending preferential trade agreements, targeting corporate complicity, and enforcing accountability through international courts.&nbsp;
