Sleep <a href="https://www.hhs.gov/sites/default/files/sg-youth-mental-health-social-media-advisory.pdf">disruption</a> is also another pathway for harm, as nearly one in three adolescents use screens until midnight or later on weekdays. Poor sleep quality is associated with altered neurological development, depression, and suicidal thoughts.&nbsp;

A survey of 10,000 children between 13 and 17 years old in England and Wales found that 70% of teenagers saw real-life violence online. Exposure to violent content normalizes dangerous behaviors, increasing the likelihood that young people adopt them offline.

Restricting access to specific platforms does not automatically translate into less overall time online or more offline activity. In practice, children can <a href="https://www.thelancet.com/journals/landig/article/PIIS2589-7500(25)00024-X/fulltext">manipulate</a> self-reported age checks. Tech companies themselves <a href="https://www.reuters.com/world/asia-pacific/google-says-australian-law-teen-social-media-use-extremely-difficult-enforce-2025-10-13/">acknowledge</a> that outright bans are hard to enforce. Even when compliance is achieved, limiting access to certain platforms often <a href="https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC12729629/">displaces</a> rather than reduces screen time, pushing children toward more dangerous and <a href="https://news.un.org/en/story/2025/12/1166557">less</a> regulated online spaces.
Age-related blanket restrictions may also <a href="https://www.humanrights.unsw.edu.au/students/blogs/australia-social-media-ban-under-16s">backfire</a>. For numerous children&mdash;especially those who are <a href="https://www.yacvic.org.au/assets/Documents/WMYT-factsheet-June13.pdf">isolated</a>, marginalized, or living in <a href="https://www.abc.net.au/news/2025-12-09/remote-kids-social-ban-isolation/106114026">remote</a> areas&mdash;social media serves as an <a href="https://www.unicef.org/press-releases/age-restrictions-alone-wont-keep-children-safe-online#:~:text=%E2%80%9CSocial%20media%20is,to%20protect%20them.">essential</a> channel for learning, social connection, recreation, and self-expression. Under-16 social media users who have already acclimated to heavy digital social engagement may experience feelings of isolation, which could be potentially&nbsp;<a href="https://mindsitenews.org/2025/12/13/australias-youth-social-media-ban-causes-anxiety-before-holidays/">destabilizing</a>. In addition, excluding under-16s from social media could <a href="https://www.yacvic.org.au/blog/the-social-media-ban-fails-young-people-through-the-fear-that-fuels-it/">erode trust</a> and lower the likelihood that young people report bullying, harassment, or predatory behavior.&nbsp;
<h3 dir="ltr">What actually works to keep young people safer online</h3>
Outright bans <a href="https://www.brookings.edu/articles/how-will-bans-on-social-media-affect-children/">ignore</a> the drivers of harm embedded in platform design, algorithms, and content moderation practices. A more effective approach is to hold technology companies accountable for these systems, ensuring that online spaces are re-designed and better governed to prevent access to harmful content while still enabling connection. Governments must also require social media platforms to reduce addictive algorithms and proactively identify and address ways in which they cause harm to children. Furthermore, <a href="https://www.yacvic.org.au/advocacy/young-people-have-the-right-to-be-safe-online-not-banned/">providing</a> parents with digital literacy resources can empower them to <a href="https://news.stanford.edu/stories/2023/05/helping-kids-use-social-media-intentionally-safely-key-says-stanford-scholar#:~:text=My%20own%20daughter,with%20these%20technologies.">guide</a> their children in developing the competencies and skills necessary to navigate social media responsibly.&nbsp;
In addition, governments can help mitigate the negative effects of social media by providing specialized, locally accessible mental health services that focus on preventing online-related anxiety, stress, and other psychological harms, while equipping children with strategies to engage safely with digital platforms. The design of any policy on social media must also <a href="https://www.youthandpolicy.org/articles/australias-social-media-ban/">include</a> perspectives from the users themselves, accounting for the agency of children, teenagers, and caregivers and grounding decisions in their lived experiences. By regulating platform behavior holistically, policymakers can create a safer, more inclusive, and sustainable digital environment for users of all ages.
