A total of <a href="https://annd.org/debt_tax/uploads/publications/290408823c4a0d3c15aa507c0c4f6c46.pdf">USD 15 billion</a> exited during the 2018 emerging markets crisis, <a href="https://www.middleeastmonitor.com/20210914-20bn-left-egypt-6-weeks-after-covid-outbreak-says-official/?fbclid=IwAR3YaaW435mR3yDcm_4jDi3_4Xpb9fNIb4pILqUrieKZQbU3ozDKlUcbfwg&amp;amp">USD 20 billion</a> fled during the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic, and a record USD 22 billion was withdrawn in 2022 following the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Each exit forced the government into further high-interest borrowing to bridge the gap, leading to an accumulation of foreign debt and repeated devaluations of the pound.
The <a href="https://aps.aucegypt.edu/en/articles/1419/hot-money-flows-in-unstable-economies-fuels-fiscal-crises">inflationary pressure</a> of a weakening pound is only part of the problem; elevated maritime risks have sent shipping and insurance premiums soaring, driving up dollar-denominated import costs and the price of <a href="https://www.madamasr.com/en/2026/03/01/news/u/egypt-eyes-energy-cuts-to-industry-braces-for-currency-value-dip-as-economy-absorbs-shock-of-us-israeli-war-on-iran/">essential commodities</a>.

In FY 2022/2023, the canal <a href="https://mped.gov.eg/adminpanel/sharedFiles/22-2023_%D8%AA%D9%82%D8%B1%D9%8A%D8%B1_%D9%85%D9%8F%D8%AA%D8%A7%D8%A8%D8%B9%D8%A9_423.pdf">generated</a> about USD 8.8 billion, accounting for 8.9% of <a href="https://www.idsc.gov.eg/InfoGraph/details/1315">total foreign currency</a> inflows and <a href="https://mped.gov.eg/adminpanel/sharedFiles/22-2023_%D8%AA%D9%82%D8%B1%D9%8A%D8%B1_%D9%85%D9%8F%D8%AA%D8%A7%D8%A8%D8%B9%D8%A9_423.pdf">contributing</a> roughly 7.8% to real GDP growth. <a href="https://aps.aucegypt.edu/ar/articles/1504/how-to-strengthen-the-resilience-of-the-suez-canal-amid-regional-tensions">The canal&rsquo;s vulnerability</a> to geopolitical tensions was demonstrated in 2024, when Houthi attacks in the Red Sea forced many shipping lines to take the longer route around the Cape of Good Hope, causing traffic through the canal <a href="https://mmd-moic.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/files/%5BGDP%20Note%20-%20Q1%202024-25%5D%20-%20Arabic%20version%20-%20Final.pdf">to drop by 68.4%</a> in the first quarter and resulting in estimated losses of&nbsp;<a href="https://www.shorouknews.com/news/view.aspx?cdate=25052025&amp;id=bce0e7b9-2353-4f42-a0dd-d16d8a63c8b6">around</a> USD 7 billion for Egypt.
<h3 dir="ltr">But also tourism&nbsp;</h3>
The US-Israeli war on Iran could also take a toll on tourism, Egypt&rsquo;s&nbsp;<a href="https://www.investinegypt.gov.eg/docs/75%20-%20Tourist%20Hotel%20Development%20Project_EN.pdf">third</a> largest source of foreign currency income. This vital sector faces potential disruptions in light of travel advisories issued by <a href="https://english.news.cn/europe/20260228/7fb6bf5454894565946382723b57865c/c.html#:~:text=Many%20European%20countries%20urged%20their,BRUSSELS%2C%20Feb.">several countries</a>, including Canada, the Netherlands, Italy and Germany, warning against traveling to the Middle East. The <a href="https://x.com/AsstSecStateCA/status/2028588420403241021">US State Department</a> included Egypt on the list it shared, advising citizens to &ldquo;depart now via commercial means.&rdquo; The war has already affected tourism, with reports circulating of <a href="https://www.travelweekly.com/Travel-News/Tour-Operators/War-in-the-Middle-East-affects-tour-operations">tour operators</a> cancelling trips to Egypt.

<h3 dir="ltr">The way out</h3>
Among the four most affected sectors&mdash;money markets, energy supplies, Suez Canal revenues, and tourism&mdash;the latter could be Egypt&rsquo;s bridge to safety. Egypt remains safe from Iranian retaliatory strikes, making it a promising destination for tourism from inside and outside the region. The government needs to capitalize on this advantage and prepare for an aggressive marketing campaign for the Easter and summer holidays.
