In this article, the author is discussing the conditional cash transfer program in Brazil (Bolsa Familia) from a number of aspects: conceptual underpinnings, features of the program, and the impact on poverty and inequality. The author concludes that while the program provides income support to the poor segments of the Brazilian population but the program proves to be self-limiting and provides only limited gains to the poor. The author also argues that the universalization and decommodification of social provision in Brazil will be the main way to guarantee more significant outcomes.
