Egypt plans to significantly increase its seawater desalination capacity, as the country’s Sovereign Fund – which is managed by the Ministry of Planning and Economic Development - seeks to attract private investments in the form of public-private partnerships and co-investments. More than 200 companies, from 35 countries, have already expressed interest.
Egypt’s economy faces a number of challenges, which manifest themselves as financial burdens on members of the public - especially in the declining value of savings.
The recent requirement by the Tax Authority for self-employed professionals to register in the electronic invoicing system has prompted objections from certain professional syndicates, notably the Doctors’ and the Lawyers’ Syndicates.
They reject the equation of their work with commercial services, and object to the high fees and accompanying bureaucracy – which could limit the availability and affordability of their services.
A parliamentarian, Ayman Mohaseb, proposed the formulation of a national database for street vendors. The parliamentarian justified that the database will be used to issue licenses and designate spaces for them to operate. Being part of the informal economy, the parliamentarian justified this proposition by stating that the informal economy “threatens the stability of the Egyptian street,” that street vendors are “uncivilized”, and that informal workers pay neither taxes nor operating fees to the authorities.
