Fertilizer shocks like these, with their attendant price volatility, <a href="https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC10015268/#:~:text=Unlike%20the%202008/09%20food,prices%20had%20more%20than%20doubled">cause</a> severe, direct economic losses to agrifood systems and drive up rural poverty.&nbsp;
Food industries also depend on oil and gas for operating farm machinery, processing and packaging products, heating greenhouses, and transporting goods. The prolonged closure of the Strait of Hormuz will only continue pushing energy prices up, disrupting shipping, trade, and supply chains, <a href="https://www.undp.org/press-releases/military-escalation-middle-east-could-push-more-30-million-people-poverty-worldwide-un-development-programme-warns">warned</a> the United Nations Development Program, disproportionately affecting some regions and peoples more than others.&nbsp;

Further exacerbating the risk, Iran has <a href="https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2026/4/6/iran-threatens-bab-al-mandeb-closure-how-would-that-affect-world-trade">threatened</a> to use Houthi allies in Yemen to shut down the Bab al-Mandeb, the strait connecting the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden and the conduit for 5% of the world&rsquo;s gas and oil. A closure would block wheat, fertilizers, and edible oils <a href="https://www.habtoorresearch.com/programmes/houthis-close-bab-el-mandeb/">en route</a> from South Asia from reaching Middle Eastern markets, further limiting food supply and bumping prices up across the region.
Egypt is already feeling the crunch. The Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics <a href="https://www.capmas.gov.eg/publications/32">said</a> this month that food prices increased by 5% from February to March 2026, and 6% from March 2025. But the Food and Agricultural Organization <a href="https://www.fao.org/newsroom/detail/fao--protracted-strait-of-hormuz-crisis-could-turn-into-global-agrifood-catastrophe/en">says</a> the worst is yet to come, as farmers have yet to use up existing food stocks before the next harvest in the fall.

Armed conflict increases greenhouse gas emissions, making vulnerable regions like Egypt more susceptible to extreme weather events, <a href="https://climateknowledgeportal.worldbank.org/sites/default/files/2021-04/15723-WB_Egypt%20Country%20Profile-WEB-2_0.pdf">including</a> heat waves, sand and dust storms, flash floods, rock slides, and heavy rains.

Not only do munitions <a href="https://www.unep.org/news-and-stories/statements/unep-statement-environmental-damage-arising-conflict-middle-east">release</a> toxic chemicals and metals in the air, but research documenting conflicts has found <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0048969724023192?utm_source=chatgpt.com#s0010">evidence</a> of an indirect link between military conflict and the increase in dust storm frequency as well. Both air pollution and dust storms have major impacts on human health, in addition to their environmental and economic toll.&nbsp;

The war in Iran is no different. The first two weeks of the war will contribute an <a href="https://climateandcommunity.org/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/Research-Snapshot_Iran-Emissions-Methodology.pdf">estimated</a> 5 billion metric tons of CO2 emissions from missiles and drones, the fuel used to transport support equipment, the fuel destroyed through the targeting of oil refineries and tankers, and finally the energy that will be needed to rebuild the buildings destroyed. In 2025, the annual average of CO2 emissions was around <a href="https://www.statista.com/statistics/276629/global-co2-emissions/?srsltid=AfmBOor4Rq2-SiiXHKiW0dBgonewP9KBGpigbQ9Eish6-fzYGDgQh_JE#:~:text=Annual%20global%20emissions%20of%20carbon,by%20more%20than%2069%20percent.">38 billion</a> metric tons, or approximately 3.3 billion per month. The 5 billion estimate from the war on Iran alone is also the <a href="https://climatetrace.org/explore#admin=&amp;gas=co2e&amp;year=2025&amp;timeframe=100&amp;sector=&amp;asset=">equivalent</a> to global CO2 emissions in January 2026.&nbsp;

<h3 dir="ltr">Stop the war, but what else?</h3>
In addition to the need for a permanent and immediate cessation of hostilities, multilateral institutions and the global community are obligated to ensure <a href="https://www.rescue.org/press-release/irc-warns-food-security-timebomb-hormuz-crisis-threatens-outstrip-ukraine-shock">humanitarian</a> access through all affected routes and to <a href="https://news.un.org/en/story/2026/04/1167289">support</a> countries that are more likely to be affected by the looming food crisis.
